Camp Under the Sea hosted two guest speakers this week. First, campers received a visit from Erin Keenan of Texas State’s Department of Anthropology. Erin spoke about archaeology, specifically zooarchaeology and marine archaeology. The campers learned about all the various things archaeologists can learn from bones, as well as how rising water levels have left many artifacts and remains to be found in the ocean and on shores. Erin even brought a variety of bones for the campers to examine.

Our second set of guest speakers came in virtually from the Nautilus Exploration Program aboard the E/V Nautilus. Our host Kelly Moran introduced the girls to Rachel Rayner, lead science communication fellow, and Aubrey Foulk, an ocean science intern. The girls were able to ask Rachel and Aubrey questions from what their favorite discoveries were to how life on a boat was. Campers loved the video clips they shared of animals the found such as the dumbo octopus and hagfish. Thank you to the Nautilus crew for showing us how cool marine science is!
